Sun Sea News Monday: Dénia Fire, Heat & D*na Festival | 7 Sept 2026
Costa Blanca North round-up: Dénia hillside fire and evacuation, sticky midweek heat then a cooler shift, D*na Festival dates, Jávea rescue, inland water warnings and N-332 driving notes.
Hola Terrace Crew! ☀️🍷
Pull up a lounger. It’s Monday 7 September, the sea still looks like August, and the nights have been doing that thing they do when September forgets the calendar. Grab something cold. The fridge has earned its keep again.
Here’s the week from Alicante up to Dénia — coast, inner towns, and the bits the glossy brochures never mention.
The Sun Sea Sangra Weather Report
We’re staying very warm through midweek. Highs still in the low-to-mid 30s on the coast, sticky nights that haven’t got the memo that August packed up. Dénia even clocked around 31–33°C after midnight over the weekend, yellow heat notices have been doing the rounds for the litoral.
From Wednesday the air should shift. AEMET is pointing to a drop in the maxima, more cloud, and a chance of weak, scattered showers, more likely north of us than a proper soak on the sand. Don’t put the flip-flops away. Do maybe find the light jumper for later in the week. The sea will still be bath-warm. Swim early, walk later. Same as every September that behaves itself.

Dénia
The story that stopped the weekend was the fire near IES Maria Ibars. A column of smoke you could see from kilometres away, homes emptied as a precaution (reports put it around 230 people), firefighters from Dénia, Benissa and Oliva plus air support. No injuries. A young man was arrested with three lighters; local coverage said he had previous links to fire-setting and that other plots may have been targeted. Ugly, close, and a reminder how fast dry scrub goes up when the nights are still this hot.

D*na Festival coming on the 26–27 September on the Marineta Cassiana promenade. Quique Dacosta curating again; Ferran Adrià as the headline name, with Paco Roncero, Susi Díaz and a stack of Marina Alta cooks (Pedreguer, Moraira, Dénia). Theme this year is books and passing on kitchen knowledge — which is very Dénia. Menus in participating restaurants from the 24th. If you only do one “big table by the sea” this autumn, this is the one.
PSPV in Dénia has Maria Josep Ripoll confirming she’ll stand for mayor in 2027. Local politics starting to hum already.
Jávea, Calpe, Moraira and the N-332
Beaches are quieter than August but not empty. Parking is human again. The driving-rules rewrite we’ve already been chatting about still lands 1 October, cyclists, scooters, that extra lane when you overtake. Worth reading once before the Facebook myths start circulating again.
Calpe and the Benissa stretch have been relatively calmer this week after last month’s drama. Keep an eye on the usual AP-7 / N-332 pinch points if you’re heading south toward Altea or Alicante.
Inland Pueblos
La Xara wrapped its fiestas with the big carroza and comparsa parade, one of those nights the whole plaza smells of powder and fried things and nobody is in a hurry.
Ondara is watching its new neighbourhood park in Caixa d’Estalvis actually take shape. Small, useful, the sort of thing you notice when you live here rather than visit.
Parcent asked residents to ease off the taps after storms left the Coll de Rates pumping station and head reservoir nearly empty. Classic Marina Alta: rain that doesn’t always land where the pipes need it.
Water and pools keep coming up inland — tens of thousands of private pools in a handful of municipalities, evaporation numbers that make your eyes water, and towns like El Poble Nou de Benitatxell and Teulada already living with tight supply. Not a beach problem. Very much a valley-and-hill problem.

Alicante end of the map
Down the coast the same heat pulse, same midweek change. Nothing as local-drama as Dénia’s fire this week, but the provincial picture is the same: still-hot days, tourism handover, and schools and town halls shifting into September gear.
That’s the week. Warm until Wednesday, then a little more air. Keep an eye on dry hills if you’re walking. Book D*na if you want a table with a sea view and someone who can actually cook. And if you’re driving the N-332 this month, leave the extra space for the bikes. October is coming whether we’re ready or not.
Until next Monday. more sun, sea, and (with luck) slightly less sticky sangria vibes.
