Costa Blanca Road Trip: Alicante to Denia Family Guide 2026

The fierce summer heat is finally easing, and the busiest tourist crowds are packing up. That means it’s almost the perfect moment to get out and about again, windows down, Mediterranean breeze in your hair, and a cold glass of sangria waiting at the end of the day.

If you’re dreaming of that classic Costa Blanca road trip, the stretch from Alicante up to Dénia is pure gold: golden beaches, dramatic cliffs, pretty inland villages and enough theme-park thrills to keep the whole family grinning from ear to ear.

I’ve put together a family-friendly things-to-do list, plus the practical bits, opening times and approximate prices per person or for a family. Prices and hours are based on the 2026 summer season and may change, so always double-check the official websites before you go. Booking online almost always saves a few euros and lets you skip the queues.

Alicante: Start High with Castle Views

Kick things off in Alicante itself with the Castillo de Santa Bárbara. Perched high on Mount Benacantil, this huge fortress gives you the best panoramic views of the bay, the port and the sparkling Med.

Entry to the castle is completely free (yes, really!). The lift that whisks you up through the mountain tunnel costs about €2.70 per person (free for over-65s).

In peak summer (roughly mid-June to early September), it’s open daily 10:00–23:00, perfect for a sunset visit with the city lights twinkling below. Outside those dates, the hours are a bit shorter. Allow 1–2 hours.

Tip: Walk up if you’re feeling energetic, or grab the lift and save your legs for sangria later.

Beaches like Postiguet and the long San Juan stretch are free and fabulous for a morning dip before heading north.

Book your tickets online in advance — it’s usually cheaper and skips the queues.

Benidorm: Theme-Park Heaven (Terra Mítica, Terra Natura & More)

About 45 minutes up the coast, you’ll hit Benidorm — skyscrapers, beaches, and the biggest concentration of fun parks on the Costa Blanca. This is where the kids (and the big kids) go wild.

Terra Mítica

The Mediterranean-themed adventure park with zones inspired by Egypt, Greece, Rome, Iberia and the Islands. Roller coasters, shows and plenty of thrills.

• Hours (high summer): usually 10:30–21:00 daily.

• Prices (high season): Adults (13–64) from about €43 online / €49 at the gate; juniors (4–12) & seniors from €37 online / €42 at the gate. Under-4s free. Afternoon tickets (from 15:00) are cheaper. Family packs (e.g. 2 adults + 1 or 2 kids) often come in around €110–€140 online depending on the deal.

Terra Natura

A gorgeous “zoo-immersion” park where you feel like you’re walking through the animals’ natural habitats (tigers, elephants, birds… the lot). There’s also the linked Aqua Natura water-park section.

• Hours (summer): roughly 10:00/10:30–20:00 (check exact closing). Open year-round with shorter winter hours.

• Prices: Adults (13–59) around €38 at the gate / from €33 online; children (4–12) €32 gate / from €27 online; seniors similar to child rate. Under-4s free. Family packs: 2 adults + 1 child ≈ €81; 2+2 ≈ €108. Extra for Aqua Natura access if not included.

Aqualandia

One of Europe’s biggest water parks — slides, wave pools, kids’ zones, the works.

• Hours (2026 season, open ~23 May–27 Sep): Peak (late June–Aug) 10:00–20:00; shoulder periods 10:00–19:00. Attractions close 30 mins earlier.

• Prices: Adults €41 gate / from €35 online; juniors (4–12) & seniors €33 / from €28. Under-4s free. Afternoon tickets cheaper. Family deals available and often great value. Combo tickets with Mundomar save money if you’re doing both.

Mundomar

Right next door — dolphins, sea lions, exotic birds and beautiful gardens. Shows are a highlight.

• Hours: typically 10:00–18:00 (sometimes later in peak summer).

• Prices: Adults from ~€26–€32; children/seniors from ~€21–€26. Under-4s free. Combos with Aqualandia are popular.

Pro tip for families: Grab the combined tickets or look for multi-park deals. Arrive early, bring sunscreen and water, and claim a shaded spot for lunch. Parking is usually available (sometimes free or cheap).

Calpe: The Iconic Rock 

Next stop, Calpe and the unmissable Peñón de Ifach (Penyal d’Ifach). This dramatic 332-metre limestone rock juts straight out of the sea and is a natural park.

The hike to the top is spectacular (views for days!), but it’s free — reservation is compulsory because only 300 people per day are allowed on the main “red route”. Book online via the official Valencian natural parks site (up to a month ahead in high season; currently often limited to ~10 days ahead).

Daylight hours only (no night climbing). The first section to the tunnel is family-friendly; beyond that it’s steeper and restricted for under-18s. Allow 2–4 hours round trip. Wear good shoes and take water. The salt flats nearby often have flamingos — another free bonus.

Altea: Pretty as a Postcard

Slow things down in beautiful white-and-blue Altea. Wander the old town’s steep streets up to the blue-domed church, people-watch on the promenade, and enjoy the beaches or rocky coves. Everything is free to explore — just budget for ice cream, a cold beer or a plate of fresh seafood. Perfect mid-trip pause for photos and a glass of something sparkling.

Dénia: Castle, Coast & Finish in Style

You’ve made it to Dénia! Head straight up to the Castillo de Dénia. This hilltop fortress has layers of history, an interpretation centre and stunning views over the town, port and Montgó mountain.

• Hours: Summer peak (1 July–15 Sep) often 10:00–00:00 (midnight — yes!); other months shorter (e.g. 10:00–18:00/20:00). Closed on a few holidays.

• Prices: Adults €3; children 8–16 €1; seniors/students €2; under-8s free. Residents of Dénia free with ID. Guided tours are sometimes included or free in summer.

Afterwards, hit the long sandy beaches (Les Marines, etc.), the lively marina, or the rugged Les Rotes coastline for swimming and seafood.

Montgó Natural Park offers great walks if you still have energy. Everything beach- and promenade-related is free.

Quick Family Budget Snapshot (Summer 2026, approximate online prices)

• Two adults + two kids (age 4–12) doing the big Benidorm parks: expect €250–€350+ if you hit Terra Mítica, Terra Natura and Aqualandia (combos help).

• Castles: almost nothing (Santa Bárbara free + lift, Dénia ~€8–10 for the family).

• Peñón de Ifach & Altea: free (just the reservation).

Add food, parking and transport, of course. The tram (L9)runs along much of this coast if you don’t fancy driving the whole way.

There you have it — history, thrills, nature and pure Mediterranean magic all within an hour or so of each other. Pack the suncream, book those tickets online, and don’t forget the sangria for the sunset toast.
