Pull up a lounger, pour something cold (the fridge has been working overtime again), and let’s catch up on what’s been happening along our stretch of coast, Calpe, Jávea, Dénia, Benidorm and a few nearby spots including El Campello and the Jalón Valley.

It’s been a rollercoaster of a week from weather to fires and so much more. Midweek we were under red heat alerts, with temperatures still hanging around 39–40 °C at midnight in places like Dénia. Parks and high-risk zones (Montgó, Peñón de Ifach and others) were closed, outdoor activities got restricted, and Dénia even opened some museums as climate refuges. The sea was bath-warm too, 27–29 °C in many spots.

Storms rolled through, temperatures dropped sharply (some reports of a 20-degree plunge), lightning struck (one hit a palm on Xàbia’s Vía Augusta, another sparked a quick fire in Llíber), and we had road chaos including a car fire that closed part of the N-332 near Gata. A bit of relief after those sticky nights, even if it brought its own drama.

Calpe

The rubbish strike finally wrapped up, but Acciona was slow with the paperwork needed to get everything properly back to normal. A few piles still lingered and the town hall kept the pressure on. Elsewhere there was a burglary that turned nasty (owner injured, two arrests), some political back-and-forth, and a nice bit of joint youth enterprise work with neighbouring towns.

Dénia

Hospital A&E was under real strain, patients spending nights in the corridors. On the brighter side the big Sant Roc swim crossing brought crowds and colour, the SonaFilm festival kept going with a focus on women’s voices in cinema, and three shiny new town buses arrived with multi-language announcements. Tourist apartment rules continue to be tweaked, containing growth in some residential areas rather than a full roll-back. Youth rental help from the Consell remains almost impossible to claim because local rents sit way above the threshold.

Jávea / Xàbia

Storm damage included a man badly hurt when a heavy door came down at a car wash. Boats are still dropping anchors in the wrong places over posidonia or inside swimming zones, locals are asking for tighter checks. A runner collapsed with a cardiac arrest on the Primer Muntanyar and was luckily revived by nurses and police who happened to be nearby with a defibrillator. Heatwave closures also temporarily suspended the Montgó disco licence while the park was shut.

Benidorm & a bit further

Tourism numbers stayed strong (hotels still packing them in). Work is moving on the next phase of the Avenida del Mediterrani and the bigger seafront promenade project. A fire near Beniardà was brought under control. Earlier in the month there was that sad parasailing accident involving a British visitor.

El Campello & Alicante extras

A young man got stuck on a 20-metre cliff at Loma de las Rejas and was winched out by helicopter, uninjured, thankfully. There was a bit of back-and-forth about the accessible section of Muchavista beach after a complaint. The council has also paused new licences for certain types of tourist flats while they review the rules. Alicante city and the wider province are still seeing high occupancy and the usual summer buzz.

Jalón Valley side

Lightning-related fire in Llíber, a couple of road accidents around Pedreguer/Gata, and the ongoing debate about that large villa development in Llíber and the water situation in the valley.

Marine patrols have already issued more than 500 warnings this year to boats parked on posidonia (most of them recreational craft). The pressure on the seagrass is still high around our coastline.

That’s the main local picture for the past week or so. Drive carefully on the N-332, keep an eye on the weather apps, and if you’re heading to the beaches or the hills give yourself a bit of extra time.
