Costa Blanca North News: Dénia Fiestas Kick Off, Sticky Heat & August Eclipse

Pull up a lounger, grab something cold (the fridge is working overtime this week), and let’s catch up on what’s been happening along our stretch of coast from Dénia down towards Alicante and the lovely spots in between.

We are in peak August now; the Marina Alta is very busy, the beaches are full, and the heat is still very much in charge.

So let’s get on with your friendly, no-nonsense roundup of the stories that actually matter to those of us living or enjoying your holidays here.

The heat is sticking around.

Yellow alerts have been active again across the northern Costa Blanca, with inland spots and parts of the Marina Alta pushing into the high 30s (even touching near 40°C in places further inland). Coastal towns like Dénia, Jávea and Calpe have been a bit more merciful thanks to the sea breeze, but nights remain sticky and tropical, and if you’re like me, you’re not getting enough sleep. AEMET continues to keep an eye on things, so keep the fans going, stay hydrated, and maybe shift those walks or shopping trips to early morning or late evening for a few more days.

Dénia’s Moros y Cristianos are officially underway.

The big one for August has started! On Saturday, the Pregón, the formal handover of the city keys and the raising of the standards kicked everything off in the Plaza del Consell, followed by a lively gala dinner that rolled on into the early hours. The full programme runs through to 16 August, with entraetes, parades, the Moorish landing and all the traditional colour and noise we’ve come to love. If you’re in or near Dénia over the next couple of weeks, the streets will be full of filaes, music and that unmistakable festive energy—perfect excuse to head out for an evening stroll and soak it up.

Beaches, posidonia and a bit of nature’s housekeeping

After the weekend swell earlier, Dénia’s beaches (especially Marineta Cassiana and Marge Roig) collected a serious amount of posidonia, nearly 370 tonnes cleared in the first couple of nights alone. The council and the beach cleaning team are working through the nights to get things tidy again, and it’s expected to take a couple of weeks in total.

Remember: those “seaweed” piles are actually a good sign of healthy waters and they protect the sand from erosion. The living meadows offshore are in pretty good shape overall, so while it looks messy for a while, it’s nature doing its thing. The beaches remain open, and the water’s still lovely once you’re past the wrack.

Almost-total solar eclipse on 12 August

Mark your calendars! On Wednesday 12 August, just before sunset, we’re in for a spectacular nearly-total solar eclipse. In Dénia it reaches about 99.9 % coverage, with Jávea, Pego, Benissa, Calpe and the rest of the Marina Alta very close behind. The maximum happens around 20:34 when the sun is already low on the horizon.

It won’t be a full total eclipse here (the path of totality is a bit further north), but the sky will darken dramatically, and it’ll feel very special. Proper eclipse glasses are essential, and most shops sell them at the counter for around 2 euros; please don’t risk your eyes. Many people are already planning terrace viewing parties or heading to higher spots with a clear western view. The Perseids meteor shower peaks around the same time too, so it could be a magical evening if the skies stay clear.

Quick local notes from up and down the coast

• Calpe has added around 150 new public parking spaces to ease the summer squeeze — always welcome news in high season.
• Jávea had a quick vegetation fire earlier in the week that was brought under control fast with aerial support.
• Benissa is investing in cooling systems for classrooms ahead of the new school year — sensible preparation for these hotter summers.
• Xàbia Jazz Festival is running 2–4 August with some strong international names if you fancy an evening of live music.
• Tourism numbers remain high across the northern Costa Blanca, and Dénia is pushing its longer-term sustainable tourism plan that focuses on quality of life for residents as well as visitors.

That’s the main flavour of the week: big fiestas, sticky heat, nature reminding us who’s in charge on the beaches, and a celestial show to look forward to in ten days.
