The Great TIE Delay Drama in Alicante Right Now (May 2026 Update)
Hola from the terrace,
Pour yourself a proper glass or cuppa because we’re diving straight into one of the hottest (and most frustrating) topics in Costa Blanca North expat WhatsApp groups right now: TIE card delays and renewals in Alicante province.
If your TIE is due to expire soon, or you’re still waiting for that precious plastic card after approval, you’re definitely not alone. The system is currently more clogged than the N-332 on a bank holiday weekend.
What’s Actually Happening Right Now (May 2026)
Right now in Alicante province, cita previa slots for TIE renewals and fingerprint appointments are extremely limited or completely invisible across most offices. Many people report that there are zero appointments available province-wide for weeks at a time.
This bottleneck is being blamed on a few things coming together at once:
The 2026 Extraordinary Regularisation Program, which was launched in April, flooded the system with applications. A big wave of 5-year Brexit Withdrawal Agreement TIEs is now coming up for renewal. The usual spring/summer demand spike.
Torrevieja and Benidorm offices are under the heaviest pressure. Some expats are having better luck (relatively speaking) checking Dénia, Elche, or even smaller offices like Alcoy. A few persistent souls are monitoring the portal obsessively at 8-9 am when new slots sometimes drop.
The Real Talk: What This Means for You
You can officially apply to renew up to 60 days before expiry and up to 90 days after without losing your legal status. In practice, many Alicante offices are only processing renewals after the card has expired right now. Once you get your fingerprint appointment (huella), expect the new card to take 30-60+ days to be ready for collection. Your resguardo (the receipt they give you) keeps you legal in the meantime.
Pro Sun Sea Sangria Tip: Keep a digital and printed copy of everything with you. Border police and Guardia Civil have been understanding, but it’s always better to be over-prepared.
How to Actually Get an Appointment (The Current Survival Guide)
- Refresh as your sangria depends on it. Check the official cita previa site multiple times a day, especially early mornings.
- Try different offices. If Torrevieja is impossible, check Alicante city, Dénia, or even look towards Valencia province as a last resort.
- Get a Gestor. The good ones have systems in place and know exactly when and where slots appear. This is one of those times where paying for help saves your sanity (and possibly a fine later).
- Join the local groups. The Costa Blanca expat communities are sharing real-time updates on which office dropped slots today.

The Light at the End of the Red Tape Tunnel
Yes, it’s stressful. But once that new TIE is in your hand, you’ll feel properly settled again. Remember why we’re all here: the golden light on the Peñón, fresh seafood at the port, and that deep exhale when you realise you really do get to live this life.
The bureaucracy is temporary. The lifestyle is the prize.
We’re building that full Red Tape and Tears downloadable brochure for the website with the very latest office contacts, checklist, and gestor recommendations. Want first access when it drops? Pop your email in the box below.
Have you been battling the TIE system lately? What office are you dealing with, and how’s it going?
Drop your experiences (and any wins!) in the comments — we’re all in this together.
Salud and stay patient, mis amigos,
