What every holidaymaker and future expat needs to know before you pack your flip-flops

Hola from the terrace! ☀️🍷

If you’re dreaming of golden-hour swims in Cala Granadella, fresh arroz a banda in Dénia, or that first chilled sangria overlooking the Peñón in Calpe, we’ve got your back. But Spain (and especially our beautiful stretch of the Costa Blanca North) has introduced some fresh rules in 2026 to keep things respectful, sustainable, and enjoyable for locals and visitors alike.

Don’t worry — it’s not all red tape. Most of it is common sense. Here’s the no-nonsense lowdown so you can arrive relaxed and ready to live like a local.

Entry to Spain

1. Entry into Spain – The Digital Border Update

Since April 2026, the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully live. Your passport gets scanned properly on arrival and departure. This helps track the 90-days-in-180 rule more accurately (super important for Brits and other non-EU visitors).

ETIAS (the new pre-travel authorisation, a bit like ESTA) is still scheduled for the last quarter of 2026. As of May 2026, you don’t need it yet — but keep an eye on it if you’re planning autumn or winter trips.

Pro tip: Have proof of accommodation for at least your first few nights, return/onward travel, and enough funds (around €122 per person per day or a minimum of ~€1,099 for longer stays). Border officers rarely ask, but it’s better to have it ready.

2. Beach & Town Behaviour – Keep It Classy

Our local towns are cracking down on classic tourist excesses:

  • No wandering in swimwear — Walking through town centres, supermarkets, or promenades in just your bikini or board shorts can now land you a fine (up to €300 in some spots). Pop on a cover-up or T-shirt once you leave the sand. This is being enforced more strictly in places like Calpe, Altea, and Jávea.
  • Beach etiquette — Towel “reserving” spots at dawn is frowned upon (and sometimes fined). No loud music, barbecues on the sand, or taking stones/shells home.
  • Smoke-free zones — Many beaches are now completely smoke- and vape-free.

Sunny reminder: The locals love sharing their coast — treat it like your own backyard.

Follow Beach Rules for a great day out

3. Alcohol & Party Rules

While the famous “six-drink rule” is stricter in the Balearics, you’ll see more enforcement here too:

  • No street drinking (botellón) in many areas — fines start at €500.
  • Some chiringuitos and bars have clearer limits, especially in high season.
  • Always use licensed taxis or apps like Cabify or Uber (if available)

Balconing (jumping from balconies) is still a very dangerous (and very expensive) idea.

4. Driving & Rental Car Tips

  • No driving in flip-flops or bare feet — €200–300 fine.
  • Roundabouts: priority to the right (as always).
  • Petrol stations sometimes close for siesta — fill up early or late evenings.

5. Holiday Rentals & Accommodation Changes

In the Comunidad Valenciana (which includes all of Costa Blanca North), new rules apply:

  • Short stays (under 11 days) are strictly classified as tourist rentals and need proper licensing.
  • Many properties now require registration numbers displayed in listings.
  • This means more professional, higher-quality options — which is great for you as a guest.

Book through trusted platforms and always check for the official registration number.

6. Other Everyday Must-Knows

  • Respect siesta and local rhythm — Shops and some restaurants close in the afternoon. Embrace it!
  • Dogs & pets — Many beaches have dog-friendly and dog-free zones. Check signs.
  • Water & environment — We’re in a dry region. Use water wisely and support businesses that do the same.
When you arrive here, relax an take in the beautiful area.

Final Glass of Sangria Wisdom

These rules aren’t here to spoil your fun — they’re about protecting the magic that makes the Costa Blanca North so special. Follow them, and you’ll be welcomed like one of the gang (with extra smiles at the bar).

You’re coming to one of the most beautiful corners of Spain. Do it right, and it’ll feel like home from the first sunset.
