How to Pair Spanish Sangria with Summer Tapas

There’s something magical about sitting on a terrace in Costa Blanca North as the sun dips behind the mountains and the first cicadas start their evening song. A big pitcher of chilled sangria is gently cooling on the table, surrounded by colourful plates of summer tapas. That’s not just dinner — that’s pure Marina Alta living.

Whether you’re here on holiday, renting a villa in Xàbia for a couple of weeks, or you’ve made the move and are now properly settled in Dénia or Altea, learning how to pair Spanish sangria with the right tapas will instantly level up your Costa Blanca experience. Today, we’re sharing our favourite local combinations so you can recreate that authentic taste at home or on your terrace.

Let’s get into it.

The Perfect Sangria Base – Our Costa Blanca Twist

Forget the overly sweet, supermarket jug stuff. Real sangria in the Marina Alta is fresh, balanced, and made with what’s around us.

Classic Red Sangria (serves 6–8)

  • 1 bottle of good Spanish red – we love a local Monastrell from Alicante vineyards
  • 100ml Spanish brandy or orange liqueur
  • Fresh orange juice from 3 big oranges (the ones from our local groves are unbeatable)
  • 1 lemon and 1 lime, sliced
  • A handful of fresh strawberries or peaches when they’re in season
  • 2–3 tablespoons of sugar (or honey) to taste
  • Chilled sparkling water or soda just before serving

White Sangria Variation

Swap the red for a crisp local Moscatel or even a sparkling Cava. Add mint leaves and plenty of green grapes. It’s lighter and perfect for those scorching July afternoons in Calpe.

Pro tip: Let the fruit and wine mingle in the fridge for at least two hours, but add the sparkling water right at the end so it keeps its fizz.

We always pick up our fruit and wine from the Saturday market in Jalón or from other local markets

6 Perfect Summer Tapas & Sangria Pairings

1. Patatas Bravas + Fruity Red Sangria

The king of tapas. Crispy potatoes with that fiery, garlicky bravas sauce. The sweetness of the sangria perfectly calms the spice. Add a little extra orange to your pitcher, and you’ve got a match made in Costa Blanca heaven.

2. Jamón Ibérico & Melon + Lightly Sweet White Sangria

Sweet, salty, refreshing. The melon brings out the fruit notes in white sangria, while the ham adds that savoury depth. This is the one we serve when friends come over for sunset aperitivo in Moraira.

3. Grilled Red Prawns from Dénia + Citrus Sangria

Dénia’s famous red prawns need almost nothing — just a flash on the grill, sea salt, and a squeeze of lemon. Pair them with a citrus-heavy sangria (extra lemon and orange), and you’ll taste the Mediterranean in every bite. This is proper gastronomy capital stuff.

4. Pimientos de Padrón + Spicy Red Sangria

Some peppers are mild, some are fiery Russian roulette. Either way, they love a red sangria with a bit of kick. We sometimes add a slice of fresh chilli to the pitcher for those who like it hot.

5. Tortilla Española + Herb-Infused Sangria

The humble Spanish omelette is comfort food at its best. Add fresh rosemary or thyme to your sangria base, and suddenly you’ve got something special. We often enjoy this combo after a morning hike around the Montgó.

6. Local Cheese & Fig Board + Sweet Mistela Sangria

End on a sweet note. Manchego (my favourite tapas cheese), fresh goat’s cheese from the mountains, and ripe figs drizzled with local honey. Use a sweet Mistela dessert wine as your sangria base, and you’ve got the perfect finale to any summer meal.

Sangria & Tapas Party Tips for Costa Blanca Living

Throwing a proper sangria night is one of the easiest ways to feel like a local. Keep the tapas simple and fresh — you don’t need ten dishes, just three or four done really well.

Set out big bowls of ice, pretty glasses, and let everyone help themselves. A chilled playlist of Spanish guitar in the background, fairy lights in the trees, and you’ve created that holiday feeling, even if you live here full-time.

For ingredients, head to the Mercat Municipal in Dénia or the smaller markets in Xàbia and Altea. Supporting local producers is what the Sun Sea Sangria lifestyle is all about.

Make It Yours This Summer

There really is nothing quite like that first refreshing sip of sangria paired with perfectly chosen tapas as the sky turns pink over the Peñón de Ifach or the lights come on along the promenade in Altea.

This is what Costa Blanca North is all about — simple pleasures done right.
