📰 Sun Sea News – 11 May 2026
Last week on the Costa Blanca North (Alicante to Dénia)
Hola Terrace Crew!
Another busy week along our beautiful stretch of coast. The days are getting noticeably longer, the light is getting that lovely golden edge in the evenings, and you can almost smell the summer sangria season arriving. Here’s everything that mattered last week from Alicante right up to Dénia.
🌤️ Weather & Vibe Check
It was still cooler than normal for early May — many of us reached for a light jacket in the mornings and evenings, especially in Benissa and the inland areas around Altea. Daytime highs hovered around 20–23°C, with some fresh sea breezes and the odd cloudy spell.
But the good news? The forecast is shifting. Next week looks warmer, and those perfect “sit-out-till-late” evenings are finally on the horizon. Golden hour in Altea and the views across to the Penón de Ifach have been absolutely stunning this week — perfect for a wander with a glass in hand.

🏖️ Beaches & Blue Flag Glory
Spain smashed another record this year with 794 Blue Flags nationwide, and the Costa Blanca North did us proud again.
- Dénia kept its strong tally with 9 Blue Flags.
- Calpe gained three new ones (Puerto Blanco, La Fossa / El Racó, and the marina) — a brilliant result.
- Altea held on to its marina flag.
- Benissa picked up a new flag for L’Advocat beach (great news after losing one elsewhere).
The message is clear: our beaches are in fantastic shape for the season ahead.
🎉 Fiestas & Local Events
- Torrevieja had its lively Feria de Mayo (7–10 May) with casetas, sevillanas, flamenco, and late-night atmosphere in Parque Antonio Soria — lots of locals and visitors enjoying the Andalusian vibe.
- Calpe continued its Piano Festival with more free open-air concerts — a lovely evening activity in the old town.
- Benitatxell wrapped up its Fiestas de la Rosa on 10 May with the final processions and street parties after ten days of celebrations.
- Moraira had its popular gastronomic and commercial fair at the beginning of the month — tapas, live music and shopping right by the castle.
- Alicante celebrated Europe Day (9–10 May) with markets, music and family activities in the city centre.
🚦 Infrastructure & Daily Life
Roadworks and spring maintenance continue on the N-332 between Altea, Calpe and Benissa — nothing major, but expect a few temporary traffic lights if you’re driving through.
Alicante Airport expansion is moving forward nicely. Passenger numbers are rising fast, and the new terminal improvements should make summer travel smoother for everyone flying in and out.
🚨 Local Crime & Safety Round-up
A few bits of positive police work last week:
- Guardia Civil arrested six members of a travelling crime gang linked to over 20 burglaries across Alicante province and beyond (good news for anyone worried about holiday-home security).
- In Calpe, a luxury-watch robbery group was taken down after operating in tourist apartments.
- An off-duty policeman in Dénia stepped in to stop a domestic incident — quick thinking that kept things safe.
Overall, the area remains very safe for residents and visitors, but as always, it’s sensible to lock up properly and use common sense with valuables.
🏘️ Town-by-Town Buzz
- Alicante: Europe Day buzz and continued airport works.
- Altea: Beautiful golden-hour evenings and the usual relaxed pueblo atmosphere.
- Calpe: Piano Festival in full swing and new Blue Flags — the town is looking sharp.
- Benissa: New Blue Flag at L’Advocat and recognition for tourism innovation.
- Dénia: Strong beach awards and the usual lively port and old-town energy.
What’s coming this week?
More fiesta prep in some towns, warmer weather, and I’ll have fresh hike ideas and a new foodie recommendation for you.
If you spotted anything interesting last week — a great new tapas spot, road chaos, or a classic “only in Spain” moment — drop it in the comments. I read every single one!
¡Salud y hasta la próxima!
See you on the terrace soon (and hopefully with fewer jackets on!).
