How Alicante Airport Expansion Will Change Tourism in Calpe, Denia & Jávea (2026–2030)
Good morning from the Sun Sea Sangria terrace ☀️✈️
If you’ve flown into Alicante Airport recently, you’ll know it’s getting busier by the month. Record passenger numbers are pouring in — and big changes are on the way that will directly affect life (and tourism) here in the Northern Costa Blanca.
Record Growth Right Now
In 2025, Alicante–Elche Miguel Hernández Airport welcomed nearly 20 million passengers — an 8.5% increase on the previous year. Early 2026 figures show the upward trend continuing strongly, with EasyJet reopening its base for the summer season.
The airport is already one of Spain’s busiest, and it’s preparing for even more growth.
The Massive €868 Million Expansion Plan
Aena (the airport operator) has confirmed a huge investment of €868 million (with some reports suggesting the total package could reach over €1 billion) spread between 2027 and 2036.

What’s actually happening:
- Major terminal expansion (around 30% bigger)
- New dedicated non-Schengen pier (great news for UK and other international travellers)
- More boarding gates, improved security, and bigger shopping & restaurant areas
- Better baggage systems and access roads
- Upgraded facilities overall
The main construction phase starts in 2027, with significant improvements expected by 2031.

How This Will Affect Calpe, Denia & Jávea
The Positive Side:
- Easier and cheaper flights — More direct routes from the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and beyond.
- Longer tourist season — Better connectivity means more visitors in spring, autumn and even winter.
- Stronger rental demand — Easier access makes our area even more attractive for second-home owners and long-stay tourists.
- Better visitor experience — Less stressful airport journeys will encourage people to stay longer and return more often.
Denia especially benefits from the perfect ferry + airport combination.
Calpe’s iconic Peñón de Ifach will draw even more day-trippers and longer-stay visitors.
Jávea continues to appeal to premium travellers who want beauty and good connections.
The Challenges:
- Peak summer (July & August) will feel busier on the roads and beaches.
- Increased pressure on local services, parking, and restaurant tables.
- Potential rise in prices as demand grows.

My Take: Better Access Needs Better Infrastructure
The Alicante airport expansion is undoubtedly a win for our region, helping Calpe and its neighbors stand out as the “quality” alternative to the crowded southern coast. However, “quality” isn’t just about how people get here—it’s about what they find when they arrive.
We are already struggling with a parking crisis that lasts nearly all year, yet the focus remains on building up rather than branching out. If we want to welcome more tourists, we need to stop the high-rise obsession and start investing in green lungs, improved public facilities, and smart parking solutions. Growth is great, but without a plan to improve our town’s actual layout, we risk losing the very charm that makes people want to visit in the first place.
Will the airport expansion be mostly good for the area, or are you worried about it getting too busy? Drop your thoughts in the comments — especially if you live here full-time or are planning to move.
