¡Hola from the coast! ☀️🍹

Welcome back to SunSea News — what a week it’s been here on the Costa Blanca! From busy bars and beaches full of life again, to the calima turning cars and gardens a dusty shade of orange. It’s great to see the area waking up properly after the quieter months.

No glossy brochure stuff here. Just the real mix: sunny (and dusty) days, local headlines, practical tips, and the everyday Spanish chaos we all know and love. Written with Snoopy’s spirit — slow down, sniff out the good spots, and enjoy the simple things while staying sharp.

Spanish & Local News from the Last Week

Here’s the honest roundup of what’s been making headlines across the northern Costa Blanca (Alicante to Dénia, Benissa, and the Marina Alta):

  • Tourism boost: Semana Santa delivered strong last-minute bookings, with hotel occupancy hitting 82–90% in many spots. National tourists helped fill the gaps, and the Costa Blanca Patronato has already approved its 2026 tourism plan — focusing on sustainability, better digital promotion, and smarter (not just bigger) tourism.
  • Property prices: They keep climbing fast. Alicante province saw an 18.3% rise in the first quarter of 2026 compared to last year. Sea-view and renovated homes in Jávea, Moraira, Benissa Costa, and Altea are moving quickest, while inland spots in the Marina Alta and Jalón Valley remain more affordable for those wanting space and quieter living.
  • Funding frustration: Several Marina Alta towns (Dénia, Xàbia, Calp, Benissa, and Teulada) have been hit hard by big cuts in the Diputación’s Plan +Cerca funding. Some places dropped from over €270,000 in previous years down to just €33,000 in 2026 — a serious blow for local projects and infrastructure.
  • Traffic & roads: Easter traffic has mostly calmed after the busy DGT operation, but expect weekend spikes again on the AP-7 and coastal routes between Alicante, Calpe, Moraira, and Dénia. Road improvement works continue in various spots.
  • Security reminders: Reports of burglaries targeting empty holiday homes continue in areas like Benissa, Teulada, Calpe, and other parts of the Marina Alta. Car thefts and break-ins along the coast (Dénia to Altea) remain an issue, though police have made some arrests. Nothing dramatic, but always worth staying vigilant.

Practical tips:

  • Don’t leave valuables visible in the car.
  • Consider a steering wheel lock and the new V-16 emergency beacon (it becomes mandatory soon).
  • For second homes, simple light timers or a basic camera can make a real difference when you’re away.

Quick SunSea Tip

Want to dodge the weekend busyness and potential hassle? Head early to quieter coves like Cala del Racó in Calpe for crystal-clear water and stunning views of the Peñón de Ifach. Or take a relaxed drive inland through the Marina Alta — fewer people, fresher air after the rain, and that authentic local feeling we all came here for.

That’s the honest snapshot for mid-April 2026. The northern Costa Blanca is waking up nicely — beautiful and lively in places, but best enjoyed with a bit of local smarts and a relaxed attitude.
