SunSeaNews: What’s Brewing in the Costa Blanca North

March 2026 edition – From Calpe to Denia and the Jalon Valley

Hola, sun-chasers! Pull up a chair, pour yourself something chilled, and let’s have a proper natter about what’s been happening round here in the last week or so. Because let’s be honest — the Marina Alta never stays quiet for long.

The not-so-fun bit first…

Guardia Civil have been busy. They arrested three men in Calpe as part of an operation targeting a group allegedly specialising in thefts from elderly people. The trio is linked to at least eight counts of theft and fraud, with activity reported in Calpe, Xàbia (Javea), Ondara, and a few other spots. They were apparently quite the mobile outfit, changing looks like they were in a bad spy film. Reminder to keep an eye on abuelos and handbags in the supermarkets, darlings. The forces are on it, which is always reassuring.

Good news for the planet (and your future bin bill)

Benissa is getting clever with its rubbish. New “intelligent” containers are rolling in — the kind that only open with a card or app and actually track what you’re throwing away. The goal? More recycling (currently a cheeky 1% for organic in Benissa — oops) and a fairer “pay-as-you-throw” system. Recycle well, and your bin tax could shrink. Finally, the bins are fighting back!

Sporting heroes all over the place

Calpe Gymnastics Club is having a moment — they picked up silver medals at the provincial championships and have seven gymnasts heading to the Spanish Championships in Oviedo. Not to be outdone, little Leo Orihuela from Ondara has qualified for the national gymnastics championship too. Go on, kids!

Culture, bikes and ravines

  • Els Poblets is launching a new cultural project called “Diàlegs” — proper debates and big thinkers in the library. Fancy a bit of brain food with your sea views?
  • Teulada-Moraira is getting a shiny new bike lane connecting the two towns. Perfect for those “I’ll cycle instead of drive” resolutions (we’ll see how long that lasts after the first hill).
  • Calpe has got the green light to renaturalise the Quisi and Pou Roig ravines. More nature, less concrete — we love to see it.

Holy Week vibes incoming

Ondara is going all-in for Holy Week 2026 with events and processions planned every single day. If you’re into solemn processions followed by a cold beer on a terrace, this one’s for you.

And the random gem…

A neighbour from Xaló (Jalon) has inspired a play called ‘Snazzy’ that’s heading all the way to New York. From the Jalon Valley to Broadway — that’s the kind of story we adore around here.

The sun sea sangria takeaway

One minute we’re hearing about clever bins and gymnastics medals, the next it’s crime arrests and Holy Week processions. That’s the Costa Blanca North for you — a glorious mix of the serious, the sporting, the cultural and the slightly chaotic. But the almond blossom is out, the sun is warming up, and the terraces are calling.

Whether you’re in Calpe watching the climbers (carefully, please), pottering round Benissa with your new bin card, or soaking up the vibes in Xàbia or Denia, remember: life’s too short not to stop for a sangria and a smile.

What’s caught your eye this week? Drop it in the comments — we love a bit of local chat.

Until next time… stay sunny, stay safe, and don’t forget the ice. 🍹☀️
