Sun Sea News 16th March
This week on the Costa Blanca North — stretching from the bustling vibes of Benidorm up through Altea, Calpe, and on to charming Denia — has delivered a classic Mediterranean mix: some fiery festival energy, unpredictable spring weather, and a few local hiccups. Think sun-soaked beaches one day, dramatic skies the next, all wrapped in that laid-back expat-friendly atmosphere we love here on the coast.
The Big Highlight: Fallas Fever Hits Denia! Denia has been buzzing with the iconic Fallas celebrations, building to the spectacular La Crema finale around March 19. These massive, satirical monuments (ninots) have popped up across town, full of humour, political jabs, and pure Valencian creativity. Streets filled with music, mascletà fireworks rattling the windows, and that unbeatable street-party energy. Expats and locals alike have been out in force, soaking up the tradition — it’s one of those “you have to see it once” experiences. Just a heads-up from the town hall: strong winds were forecast, so commissions took extra care securing those epic structures. If you missed the main burn, catch the afterglow — Denia’s cultural scene stays lively with new talks and events popping up.
(Imagine a vibrant Fallas monument towering in Denia’s streets, lit up at night with crowds cheering — pure fiesta magic!)
Weather: A Rollercoaster Week Early in the week, a yellow alert for storms rolled in, bringing heavy downpours, cooler temps, and gusty winds especially along the northern stretches (think Javea, Calpe, Benissa, Teulada areas). Some spots saw up to 20L/m² in an hour — enough to make umbrellas essential and remind everyone why we love the dramatic Spanish skies. But hey, spring wouldn’t be spring without a bit of drama! By mid-week, things brightened up in places like Benidorm, with sunny spells hitting around 18°C and folks posting beach strolls on Levante — a welcome break after the wet start.
Other Local Bits and Pieces
- On the property side, chatter continues about steady prices in spots like Denia’s Saladar area — still a sweet spot for value if you’re dreaming of that coastal pad.
- Benidorm’s gearing up for its legendary St Patrick’s Day bash tomorrow (March 17), with the whole resort set to turn green — expect Irish pubs overflowing, live music, and plenty of Guinness. If you’re nearby, it’s always a cracking atmosphere.
- In Altea, a residential fire last week (around March 11) led to around a dozen people being evacuated from a block — thankfully no major injuries reported, but a stark reminder to check those smoke alarms.
The Not-So-Great The stormy weather caused some minor disruptions — slippery roads, localised flooding risks, and wind advisories — but nothing catastrophic compared to earlier winter DANAs. A few older news echoes of fires or incidents in the region remind us to stay vigilant, but overall, the coast has bounced back quickly with that resilient spirit.
All in all, it’s been a lively week up north — festivals keeping the soul alive, weather testing our adaptability, and the beaches still calling for those early-season walks. Here’s to more sunshine ahead, a safe Fallas wrap-up, and plenty of sangria on the terraces. If you’re here or heading this way, drop a comment on your favourite spot — we all know the Costa Blanca North magic is in the details!
Stay sunny, stay safe. 🌞🍹
