Hello, trail mates!

Welcome to my first Blog Trail,

If there’s one lump of rock that defines Calpe (and probably half the Costa Blanca postcards), it’s the Peñón de Ifach — that massive 332-metre limestone beast plonked right by the sea like nature decided to show off. We’ve eyed it from the beach lounger for years, gin & tonic in hand, thinking “one day we’ll climb that thing.” Well, one day finally came — and blimey, what a proper adventure it was.

This isn’t your gentle seaside stroll. It’s a proper hike with a bit of everything: shady pine paths, a spooky tunnel, rocky scrambles, and views that’ll make you forget how much your calves are complaining. But the payoff? Panoramic stunners over Calpe’s twin beaches, the Med sparkling like it’s been Photoshopped, and (on a clear day) glimpses all the way to Ibiza or Benidorm’s skyline. Worth every sweaty step.

Quick Stats at a Glance

Distance: About 5 km round trip (out-and-back) Time: 2.5–4 hours, depending on your pace, photo stops, and how long you linger at the top Difficulty: Moderate to challenging — easy peasy up to the tunnel, then rocky and steep (some hands-on bits, chains in places for grip). Not for little ones (under 18s not allowed past the tunnel), and if you’ve dodgy knees or vertigo, maybe give the summit a miss. Elevation gain: Around 300 m Best time: Early morning (beat the heat and crowds) or late afternoon. Avoid midday summer scorchers — this rock turns into an oven. Spring/autumn are golden. Dog-friendly? Sadly, no — not allowed in the park. Leave the pups at home for this one.

How to Get There & Park Head to the Parc Natural del Penyal d’Ifach visitor centre (just north of Calpe’s old town, off Avenida de la Generalitat). Free parking at the base (gets busy, so arrive early). If it’s full, street parking nearby or a short walk from town.

The Important Bit: Booking a Free Slot. This is a protected natural park with a daily limit of 300 visitors to keep it pristine (smart move). You must book a free appointment online in advance via the official site: parquesnaturales.gva.es (look for Penyal d’Ifac). Book at least a day ahead — slots go quick in peak season. Show up with your confirmation (printed or on phone), and check in at the visitor centre for a quick eco-briefing.

The Route – Step by Step

Visitor Centre to the Tunnel (easy bit, 30–45 mins) Wide, paved path zigzagging up through cool pine forest. Gentle climb, info boards about birds/plants, and cracking views back over Calpe. Perfect for warming up the legs. Through the Tunnel (the fun switch) A short, dark, hand-carved tunnel (torch on phone helpful, floor can be slippery). Pop out the other side — bam! — the landscape changes to rugged, exposed rock. This is where the real hike starts. Tunnel to Summit (the proper graft, 45–90 mins up) Rocky, uneven path with some chain-assisted sections for steep bits. Not technical climbing, but you’ll use your hands here and there. Watch your footing — loose stones and sheer drops (stay on the path!). Seagulls swoop like they’re judging your progress. The views get better with every metre. The Top (soak it up!) Summit plateau — find a spot, crack open the water/snack, and gawp. 360° magic: beaches below, mountains inland, sea forever. Sign the visitor book if it’s there, snap the selfies, feel smug. Back Down (easier on the knees, but watch those rocks) Same way — about 45–60 mins. Gravity helps, but rocky bits still need care.

What to Pack (Non-Negotiables)

Sturdy trainers or hiking boots (good grip essential — no flip-flops!) Plenty of water (at least 1–2 litres per person) — no facilities up there. Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses (exposed after the tunnel). Snacks/energy bars Camera/phone for views (signal spotty at the top) Light layer — breezy at the summit even in summer Bin bag for your rubbish (leave no trace!)

Post-Hike Rewards Head back to Calpe’s old town or the port for a well-earned tinto de verano, fresh calamari, or ice cream. Our fave? A shady spot at one of the Arenal-Bol beach chiringuitos — feet in the sand, watching the rock you just conquered glow in the sunset. Proper hero moment.

This trail is a brilliant intro to Costa Blanca hiking — tough enough to feel accomplished, beautiful enough to want more. If you’ve done it, drop your tips in the comments: favourite viewpoint? Scariest bit? Best recovery drink.

Next time: maybe something gentler, like the coastal path to hidden coves or Sierra de Oltà for pine-scented peace. Until then, get booking that slot and lace up — the Peñón awaits!

¡Buen camino, and see you at the top! 🍹🥾
