Mist-erious Bernia: We Drove Up for Epic Views… Nature Said “Nah”

Listen, if there’s one thing my hubby and I are experts at, it’s turning a lazy “fancy a walk?” into full-on chaos without a single Google search between us. Research? Maps? Difficulty ratings? Nah. That’s for organised people. We’re the “living on the edge” brigade—mostly because we forget to check if the edge actually has a path wide enough for two panicking adults.

We parked right near the little restaurant at Casas de Bernia (the one with the unbeatable terrace views on a clear day), laced up our boots, slung on backpacks, and set off upward. This wasn’t going to be a gentle stroll. The Sierra de Bernia loop—complete with its famous natural tunnel (El Forat), ancient fort ruins, and that infamous exposed, rocky path along the southern face—is famously not for the faint-hearted. Sharp stones underfoot, narrow ledges with heart-in-mouth drops, and the kind of terrain that keeps you focused on every single step. But that’s exactly why we love it: the thrill mixed with the promise of epic coastal panoramas over Altea Bay, Benidorm’s distant skyline, and the glittering Mediterranean.

The arches and….sea mist

We pushed on, legs burning, hearts racing, chasing that moment when you’d emerge from the tunnel and the whole world would open up in a jaw-dropping reveal. Except… nature had other plans.

As we crested higher, a thick blanket of sea mist rolled in like an uninvited guest. One minute we were climbing under bright sun; the next, the famous views—the bay, the sea, the distant peaks—vanished behind a soft, swirling white curtain. The hills and valleys below disappeared into a dreamy, opaque haze. No glittering coastline, no dramatic drop-offs to make your stomach flip. Just us, the mountain, the mist, and the quiet thrill of the unknown.

Not the views to die for today
Sometimes you have to just sit back and enjoy what nature gives you

It wasn’t the Instagram-perfect vista we’d hoped for, but somehow it felt even more magical. The ruins of the old Fort de Bernia loomed ghostly through the fog, ancient stones whispering pirate-defense stories from centuries ago. The “scary” path felt wilder, more intimate—every careful footfall on loose rock amplified by the muffled silence.

That day reminded us why we chase these adventures: not always for the views, but for the stories, the sweat, the surprises, and the way a simple hike can still leave you buzzing long after. Two years on, the mist has lifted in memory, but the vibe? Pure sun, sea, sangria—and a healthy dose of “we did that.”
