Sun Sea Seekers - Benidorm
Benidorm, love it or hate it — just like Marmite — there’s no other place like it. That bold, in-your-face skyline, the non-stop energy, the endless beaches… it’s Marmite on steroids, and it either hooks you or sends you running. But if you can delve past the Smurfs (those blue-painted high-rises that look like they’ve escaped a kids’ cartoon), the loud English pubs blasting karaoke at noon, and the 24/7 party rep, you’ll find the real Benidorm hiding underneath. It’s a proper, layered Costa Blanca classic with history, cracking beaches, local pockets, and a surprising amount of charm if you know where to look.

Forget the one-dimensional “Brits abroad” stereotype for a minute. Benidorm splits into three very different areas that give you options depending on whether you want full-on buzz, chilled family vibes, or something in between. Each one has its own personality, and once you get the hang of them, you can pick the side of Benidorm that actually suits you.
Levante – the loud, lively east side (Playa de Levante)
This is the Benidorm postcard everyone knows: 2km of golden sand, a thumping promenade crammed with bars, clubs, shops, and neon signs, and that famous wall of skyscrapers reflecting in the sea like a mini Dubai-by-the-Med. It’s high-octane from sunrise (early risers doing beach yoga or grabbing a coffee) right through to the early hours (The Strip and the British/Irish pubs in full swing). Watersports everywhere — jet skis, banana boats, paddleboards — plus family shallows for the kids and chiringuitos serving cold sangria and fresh calamari while you people-watch. Yes, it’s loud. Yes, the English is everywhere. But it’s also unapologetically fun, and the promenade is one of the best in Spain for a sunset stroll with a tinto de verano in hand.

Poniente – the calmer, wider west side (Playa de Poniente)
Cross the headland and you step into a noticeably quieter, more local-feeling stretch. Over 3km of fine sand, plenty of space even in summer, and a long, palm-lined promenade that’s perfect for morning walks, bike rides, or just sitting on a bench with a view of the Old Town and the Balcón del Mediterráneo clifftop viewpoint (that dramatic square with cannons, anchors, and panoramic sea vistas). The water’s calm and shallow — brilliant for kids or lazy swims — and the vibe leans more towards Spanish families, couples, and anyone wanting to breathe. Fewer neon signs, more relaxed beach bars, and easy access to the quieter end near La Cala. It’s Benidorm without the volume turned up to eleven.
La Cala – the tucked-away family pocket (Cala de Finestrat / far Poniente end)
Right at the western tip (technically spilling into Finestrat but very much part of the Benidorm scene), La Cala feels like a little escape hatch. A sheltered sandy bay with clear, calm water, gentle slope, and a proper neighbourhood feel — low-rise apartments, fewer high-rises, and a peaceful promenade even when the rest of Benidorm is heaving. It’s a favourite with families for the shallow entry and lack of big waves, but it’s also ace for anyone wanting a quieter dip, a snorkel in the shallows, or just a cold beer at a laid-back beach bar. Paths and viewpoints link it back to Poniente, so you can dip into the main action whenever you fancy.
Honest tips for digging into the real Benidorm
Getting around: Tram or bus from the north is dead easy; drive and park near Poniente (free outside peak) or use paid lots closer to Levante. The promenade connects everything on foot.
Crowds: Levante always buzzing; Poniente and La Cala much quieter mid-week or off-season.
Dog-friendly: Poniente and La Cala more relaxed off-peak; leads needed.
Food & drink: Levante for endless options (tapas, paella, British breakfasts); Poniente and La Cala for calmer family-run spots and better value. Direct bookings or mid-week often bag the cheapest stays.
Hidden gems: Climb to the Balcón del Mediterráneo for sunset views, wander the Old Town streets behind Levante for proper local bars, or time a visit for the low-key San Juan bonfires in June.

Fall in love with Benidorm

So grab your water bottle, slap on the factor 50, and give it a proper go. Delve past the Smurfs and the noise — the real Benidorm’s waiting.
¡Salud, and see you on the promenade! 🍹🏖️
